Parents from Moormead Football Club in St Margarets have called on Richmond Council to restore a park pavilion “in desperate need of repair”.

The group are waiting to hear back from the council about their community-led ‘expression of interest’ to restore the building, which was submitted in December last year.

The community bid would provide working toilets and changing facilities in the pavilion, which it says has “fallen into a state of disrepair”.

Gariesh Sharma, an Orleans Primary School parent who is leading the bid, said: “Moormead Park pavilion should be properly restored so that it can return to the heart of the community.

“The building is in desperate need of repair and we can help raise the money to do this.”

The park is used by 150 children who play for Moormead Football Club every Saturday morning for training and playing.

The community bid team says it would consider a link-up with a commercial partner to provide hot and cold refreshment during ‘sociable’ hours.

Hundreds of supporters turned out on January 16 to show their support for the pavilion’s restoration.

Brentford FC’s Community Sports Trust has provided support for the bid.

The trust’s chief executive Lee Doyle said: “we have also seen other clubs and organised groups of a range of ages make use of the local park.

“An improved changing and refreshments area could be designed with versatility to become a sustainable, vibrant hub in the community.”

Head of parks at Richmond Council David Allister said the pavilion needs “fresh purpose” and that it has received “a number of expressions of interest” to improve the building’s facilities.

He said: “We agree that Moormead Pavilion in Moormead Recreation Ground needs a fresh purpose which meets the needs of the local community.

“The council has a responsibility to ensure that any potential business awarded a contract to regenerate the pavilion is commercially viable and represents value for money for our taxpayers.

“We have received a number of expressions of interest to regenerate the building, and are in the process of considering these submissions.

“We’re looking forward to updating the local community on the next steps of this process which will be announced within the next few weeks.”
