Twickenham MP Tania Mathias has come out in support over a resident left “furious” over the RFU installing CCTV cameras outside his home.

Spencer Chisnall, who lives in Whitton Road, opposite Twickenham stadium, said his human rights had been breached by the presence of the security cameras overlooking his house.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Spencer Chisnall told the RTT he "feels like he is banging his head against a brick wall"

The RFU says it has retrospective planning permission to install them, after planning permission was rejected by Richmond Council in July.

But Dr Mathias believes it is another example of the RFU “antagonising the local community” and has questioned the need for the cameras in the first place.

She said: “I sympathise with anyone worried about CCTV because what I like is the number of volunteers in the area.

“Why have CCTV if you gave got people on the ground, that is my concern and I am happy to liaise with people concerned about it.

“The RFU is again letting themselves down by antagonising the local community.

“That is why this year has to be a new era of how the RFU engage with Twickenham – I think that they want to.”

The RFU admit the cameras are likely to remain after the Rugby World Cup is over, while the council continue to investigate the matter.
