The community of Hampton Wick chipped in with balloons, music and even a Rolls-Royce with “gangster machine gun”, to hold a wedding for a couple at St John’s Church last Sunday.

Businesses, residents and the church worked together to organise Adrienn and Wayne Englishby’s big day as thanks for their contribution to the community.

Wayne, who runs a coffee shop called Hussars Coffee House, proposed to his girlfriend of five years, six months ago and since then the community planned and paid for the wedding.

Resident Jon Altman, who plays Nasty Cotton in EastEnders, played the drums and another musician played the saxophone.

Approximately 340 people attended the wedding, which had an open-door policy. Swann Inn held the reception. The newlyweds are yet to head off on their honeymoon, although they received Thomas Cook vouchers as wedding gifts.

Tom Saunders, 46, was head usher. He said: “Wayne has been instrumental in making the community really feel like a community. His coffee shop is a local hub, where people meet, stop and chat.

“It’s a testimony to how popular they are that Thomas Cook in Kingston ran out of vouchers the Saturday before the wedding.”
