A group of scouts are looking forward to activities this winter after their headquarters got an overhaul.

The 2nd Mortlake Scout group, who meet in the gymnasium in Alder Road, did work to create a better centre for the whole community.

The scouts have used the building since 1912 but it had suffered decades of neglect and faced closure unless it got heating and hot water.

The refurbishment, which cost £41,000, saw male and female toilets created, a disabled toilet with ramps installed, the building rewired and the worst areas of external woodwork replaced.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

The scouts raised £4,000 and the Veolia Environmental Trust awarded them £15,500 through the landfill communities fund.

Hugh Choudhury, fundraising committee member, said: “The warmer, drier and more attractive building will now secure the future of our Scout group’s increasing numbers and provide a low cost community hall for events such as children parties and community meetings.”
