New speed limits will be introduced in Hampton Hill High Street following a public consultation, but Kew and Whitton have missed out.

Of those surveyed, 51 per cent of Hampton Hill’s respondcents supported the introduction of speed limits in their area, along with 56 per cent of Kew’s and 47 per cent of Whitton’s.

Council member for highways Stephen Speak said while the majority of Kew’s respondents supported the 20mph limits, the results did not translate into majority support for introducing the restrictions on Kew’s main and residential roads.

He said: "Hampton Hill is just the one road being affected, whereas the Kew consultation was for a much broader area.

"If you have got money for road safety, is it a good idea to put limits in the residential areas, which are relatively safe anyway?

"In my view, it’s better to try and focus on areas where the problems are, so we are prioritising around schools and high streets, which is why we are implementing speed limits in Hampton Hill."

Coun Speak said police did not have the resources to strictly enforce a 20mph limit, so it was necessary to implement in areas where it can be self-enforced.

Leader of the opposition, Councillor Stephen Knight said the issue needed to be addressed further and more speed limits should be introduced.

He said: "The consultation had 5,000 residents responding, and it looks clear cut that this is what they want.

"As a borough we have seen a huge increase in the amount of cycle accidents and it’s about time we took action.

"Our view is that this is a decision that needs to be given some more thought. We are going to carry on fighting for safer roads in the borough."
