A wheelchair service has been shortlisted for a Health Service Journal award for compassionate patient care.

The service, run by Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust, won funding to pilot a new sleep system scheme as part of a Dragons' Den-style initiative.

The scheme, currently being piloted in Hounslow, allows patients with complex health needs to maintain good posture while sleeping and is individually tailored to the needs of the user.

The project aims to help patients be more comfortable overnight so they and their carers can have a more restful night's sleep.

Staff from the wheelchair service will attend the Health Service Journal (HSJ) award national finals to deliver a presentation before the winner is announced at the ceremony in November.

Sarah Brown, the trust's wheelchair service manager, said: "As a team we are delighted to be shortlisted for the HSJ awards and extremely proud to be given the opportunity to deliver a presentation about this innovative pilot project to the judging panel."

The awards celebrate excellence, innovation and best practice within the healthcare sector.
