Rumours that Mayor of London Boris Johnson was attacked by a Brentford FC fan have been rubbished by police.

Officers were called to a fight on the train at Doncaster on Saturday evening as Brentford fans travelled home after watching their team lose at Middlesbrough.

Mr Johnson was on the same East Coast mainline train on his way to London King's Cross.

Twitter rumours were soon afoot that a Brentford fan had been involved in an altercation with Mr Johnson, but police moved quick to deny the claims.

A police spokesman said: "Shortly after 8.45pm on Saturday, September 20, we were called following reports of a fight on board an East Coast Trains service at Doncaster.

"Officers attended, boarded the train and, although no offences were disclosed, spoke to two passengers about their behaviour.

"No arrests were made.

"Though Mayor of London Boris Johnson is believed to have been on the service, there is no indication that he was in any way involved in the incident reported to British Transport Police."

Fulham supporter @theFFCfan started the rumours by posting an unclear photo of the alleged incident on Twitter, captioned: "Police arresting the Brentford fan that punched Boris Johnson".

Fellow Twitter users commented that the fan was simply making mischief because of the rivalry between the Bees and Fulham, who have yet to win a single Championship match following last season's relegation.

Brentford fan Nick Logan responded by tweeting: "No one hit him we were all having a laugh, a few soldiers had a pop at him. Couple of ours were taken off then back on".
