A new visitor reception at Strawberry Hill House has been opened in recognition of increasing visitor numbers.

Funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the new building provides an entrance into the historic house's grounds.

It includes enhanced facilities for visitors as well as a base for the garden team with an office and workshops.

Director at Strawberry Hill Nicholas Smith said: "We are delighted that visitor numbers to the house are steadily growing and to accommodate this increased interest in Horace Walpole’s gothic villa and garden, we have opened the new building."

Mayor of Richmond Councillor Jane Boulton said: "I have visited Strawberry Hill house many times over the years and think the improvements to the facilities are fantastic.

"The improved access will allow a wider range of visitors to come and enjoy this beautiful house and grounds and the living roof is not only attractive but environmentally friendly too."

The roof has been planted with wildflower meadow plants and has been supported by the Friends of Strawberry Hill.

In further good news, Strawberry Hill House community garden received a level 5 outstanding award at the RHS London in Bloom It's Your Neighbourhood awards earlier this month.
