Plans to protect the character of Kew, Whitton and Heathfield will be unveiled this month.

The village plans were put together by Richmond Council with the help of residents, who said what they would like to see protected or improved in their hometowns.

In Kew, people wanted to retain and enhance historic buildings, reinforce character, have sufficient parking and ensure heritage sites and assets were protected.

In Whitton and Heathfield, new developments should reinforce the 1930s character of the area and the range of shops and services should be improved.

Residents also wanted to protect and enhance open spaces, particularly along the River Crane.

The new guidance will now be taken into account when the council makes decisions on planning applications.

Councillor Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council cabinet member for environment, business and community, said: "Residents in Kew, Whitton and Heathfield know their local area better than anyone. These village plans now really reflect the character, heritage assets and features that have identified as important, along with priorities for improving their villages."

The next phase of village planning over the next three years will cover Barnes, East Sheen and Mortlake.

The village plans will be launched in at Whitton Youth Zone at 6.30pm on September 23 and St Winefride’s Church Hall, Kew, at 6.30pm on September 25.
