A primary school headteacher will work his last day in school after a quarter of a century leading the way.

Collis School’s David Butterfield, who spent 28 years at the school and 25 years as headteacher, will retire at the end of this term.

Mr Collis, who joined the school in 1986, has seen the school in Teddington grow considerably in size since he started.

The friendly headteacher said the school maintained an intimate feel despite having more than 700 pupils.

He said: "I do know every child in the school and can tell you something about most of the 720 children.

"I like to get in among them and make sure my day is not spent sitting in my office.

"I make time to have lunch with the children and to go into classes."
