A man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after an incident on the forecourt of Surbiton railway station on Saturday.

British Transport Police, Kingston police officers and an ambulance were called to the station 3.35pm and found a man in his 40s lying in the forecourt.

He was taken to St George's hospital, Tooting, in a serious condition.

Two people were arrested for grievous bodily harm. One has been charged and appeared at Kingston Magistrates' Court on Monday. He was remanded on bail until Tuesday.

The station car park and forecourt were sealed off until 8pm as police investigated the scene of the crime. Commuters wanting to get into the station had to take a 15-minute walk round the block to the back entrance. No train services were affected.

A spokesman for St George's hospital said yesterday (Thursday) the victim's condition was stable.

The British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses and ask anyone with information to ring them on 0800 405040.
