Racing around Europe in a 16-year-old Renault Laguna is a challenge one Surbiton man cannot wait to undertake.

Rupert Basham, 26, of Maple Road, will swap Kingston for the Swiss Alps, scenic Verona and coastal roads of Naples when he embarks on a 1,500 mile, four-day rally to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The journalist, along with friend Simon Alderson, will journey from Calais to Naples to raise a pound for every mile and compete against 100 other teams in the Staples2Naples rally.

The duo chose the Alzheimer’s Society as their chosen charity because Mr Alderson’s grandfather had suffered from the disease.

He said: “I’ve always wanted to take part in a banger rally, but the fact that I know very little about what goes on underneath the bonnet has always put me off.

“It’s a difficult route anyway before you take into account that our car has seen better days, but we will make it to the end – one way or another.”
