A 79-year-old woman has been taken as a priority to hospital after being knocked over by a car in King Street, Twickenham.

A police officer said: “There was an accident between a car and an elderly woman who has sustained life changing injuries. Hence we have a scene until we hear back from the hospital.”

The London Ambulance Service was called to the scene at 2.51pm and one ambulance crew and a single responder in a car arrived within six minutes.

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: “We treated a woman reported to be 79 years old for leg injuries and she was taken as a priority to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.”

Part of the road is closed and traffic is being diverted via Water Lane and Cross Deep, causing long traffic delays.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.

Police and incident response units also attended and diversions were expected to be in place for at least another hour.

A nearby charity shop worker said she came out of her shop moments after the woman was knocked down.

She said: “I came out and saw that she was lying on the floor and then they put her in the ambulance.”

A 267 bus, a blue land rover and blue Volvo estate remain at the scene.
