Mo Farah is Olympic champion after he raced to victory in the 10,000m last night.

Farah was one of Team GB’s greatest hopes for a medal in the Olympic Stadium and he didn’t disappoint, picking up where team-mates Jessica Ennis and Greg Rutherford had left off to put himself on top of the podium.

The atmosphere inside the showpiece venue was incredible as Farah judged the race to perfection, pacing himself before beginning to make a move with five laps remaining.

And when he reached the bell, he really began to move away and although those around him kept pace, they were unable to pull him back in, leaving him free to race home in 27.30.42 ahead of training partner Galen Rupp.

And Farah was overjoyed with the accomplishment.

“I just want to thank everyone who has supported me. It hasn’t been an easy event where I said “I’ll train to become Olympic champion”, it has been years and years of hard work,” he explained.

“I just can’t believe that I am Olympic champion in London, right on our doorstep.

“It is something I have been working so hard for and putting in a lot miles because long distance is a lonely event. If you don’t put in the work, you don’t get out of it.”

He added: “It is amazing. If it wasn’t for the crowd I don’t think that would have happened. They give you that lift and that boost. It is just incredible.

“A lot of people thought that with having the Olympics in London there is a lot of pressure – obviously there is pressure – but sometimes you can’t think about it. You have just got to use the crowd.

“And I think every single one of us who has won a gold medal has used the crowd. That made a difference for sure.”
