A clerical officer from Mortlake station will don the iconic white Olympic tracksuit to complete a portion of the torch relay.

On Sunday, July 22, Daniel Opoku, 49, will run a 300 to 400m leg of the relay, from his hometown of Erith, south-east London, to Bexley.

Mr Opoku, who has worked for South West Trains for 17 years, was nominated to carry the torch because of his excellent customer service skills, something which has previously won him a whole host of awards, including employee of the year and personality of the year.

The lucky torch bearer said he was a big fan of the Olympics.

He said: “I am very excited, it’s amazing to be involved in the biggest global sports event. My friends, family and customers are all excited for me. Everyone has been asking me questions about it.”

Mr Opoku added: “We have planned to hold an Olympic Torch Day at Mortlake station on July 26, between 7am and 3pm, to let passengers see the torch. They can touch it and take pictures with it – it will give them the opportunity to enjoy it and let them shine.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the Olympic torch day, where Mortlake staff members will also take donations for charity.
