The windy weather shocked cricketers playing in Bushy Park when a strong gust blew over their giant sight screens.

Teddington Cricket Club’s third XI had been taking on Ickenham on Saturday, June 16, when their game was interrupted by the extreme weather.

It was thought to be the first time the huge screens had toppled over.

It came on the same afternoon two nine-year-old boys were injured during cricket practice in Wandsworth when a lime tree fell on them as high winds blew across the country. Both have since left hospital and are recovering.

The game in Bushy Park eventually continued without any sight screens because the teams feared it was too dangerous. The umpires also removed the bails because they kept blowing off.

James Wade, captain of Teddington Cricket Club’s first XI, was also playing in Bushy Park.

He said: “It was the worst conditions I’ve ever played in, it was just ridiculous.

“We even had the bizarre situation of having to appeal for people when they were bowled out.”

The third XI eventually won their Middlesex County Cricket League game by six wickets.

Families also battled with the blustery weather as ate their picnics and watched a blues band during a fun day on Twickenham Green on Saturday.

And Hilary Bartlett, manager of the Companion Dog Show, said a gazebo blew away in the wind as they took part in the Ham Fair.
