Taking part in this year’s Pink Ribbonwalk will be especially poignant for one mother-of-two after having spent the past year undergoing treatment for breast cancer herself.

Catie Callender, 45, of Hammersmith, will take part in her third Breast Cancer Care Ribbonwalk when it comes to Marble Hill Park this year to show support for other sufferers, and survivors, of the disease.

She said she was inspired to take on the walk because Breast Cancer Care was the chosen charity at her former job and because of her own personal experience with cancer.

She said: “Crabtree and Evelyn have a lot of female customers and breast cancer is an issue that a lot of women are affected with and we felt it was a great charity to support.

“Last year, just a week before I was due to do the walk again, I actually found out I had breast cancer myself and that was clearly a bit of a challenging time.

“But what I found was doing the walk felt like something very positive to do and it was helpful to me as I was going through the initial stage. I found the walk and being surrounded by survivors a very positive experience as I was going through that.”

The former Crabtree and Evelyn managing director, who took medical retirement so she could seek curative cancer treatment, will be doing the walk on Sunday, June 16, with former colleagues, and will be greeted at the finish line by her family.

She said: “It is amazing, right from the walk’s warm up to doing the walk itself and just virtually with everyone in pink t-shirts the sense of togetherness and camaraderie is great. It is just an amazing experience.

“If nothing else I feel that the greatest thing that I feel I can give to others is making sure they’re breast aware and following up and having regular checks as if they can find it early it makes a huge, huge difference.”
