TV presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle is set to help out cleaning up the banks of the Thames in Barnes as part of a campaign to preserve English water banks.

Fogle, famous for extreme sports challenges and hosting TV shows such as BBC’s Crufts, will lead a group to Richmond on Sunday, July 8, in a bid to pick up some of the 1,900 littered items dirtying every kilometre stretch of the UK coastline.

He said: “We have such beautiful beaches, rivers and canals here in the UK and during this campaign I will be asking as many people as possible to come down to one of our events and keep their local area ‘barefoot friendly’.”

The campaign is named the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, and was launched five years ago by the Californian winery Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, together with environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage.

Volunteer participation meant in 2011 2.5 tonnes of litter were removed from the UK’s coastline and as a thank you every contributor was awarded with a glass of Californian wine.
