A mother who battled breast cancer at the age of 31 is hoping to bring a touch of pink to 2007 with a calendar.

Mortlake resident Angela Johnson was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago and underwent a mastectomy.

Now she has rounded up local women aged between 21 and 40 to pose in the calendar in aid of Breast Cancer Care - the charity that helped her cope with her illness.

"I was absolutely shocked," said Angela about being diagnosed.

"My mother had died from it quite a few years ago, so potentially the history was always there at the back of my mind.

"It all happened really quickly and they got me in for the operation.

"A few weeks later I started chemotherapy and just had to get on with it.

"It was not something I had to make a decision about, they are all made for you. I then had to spend the next year going through it."

Because of her family history Angela visited the Royal Marsden for a check-up but was told to return when she was 35. But aware of the risks she continued to check herself and when she discovered a lump she headed straight to the doctors.

Angela said: "Mainly my family and friends supported me.

"It wasn't until I got towards the end of my treatment that I found the charity Breast Cancer Care.

"They had an online chatroom forum where I met lots of other girls. I found support and went to speak to someone."

Angela took part in a fashion show for the charity and recently hosted a ball. But it was in May that she had the idea of creating a calendar.

She said: "I thought it would be a really really fun thing to do. Everyone was excited and up for it."

The pictures in the calendar are black and white with something pink pictured in every shot. The photographs were taken at Angela's aunty's house, who also features in the calendar, and a hairdresser and photographer donated their services for free.

Angela, who has a six-year-old daughter said: "It is all about awareness and the need to check yourself, even though you are not being checked by the hospital.

"I found a lump, it was tiny, that's what saved my life."

The calendars, 400 of which were printed, are being sold for £10 each. Anyone interested in getting their hands on one should call Angela on 07890 969453.
