St Mary’s University has awarded students Britain’s first ever degree in hypnosis.

The university, in Waldegrave Road, Strawberry Hill, presented the historic qualification at a graduation ceremony in Westminster Cathedral.

Hypnotherapist and course graduate Lorna Damiani said: “Hypnotherapists like myself have been helping people with health and emotional problems for years, but the scientific community still has a limited understanding about how the subconscious works.

“The BSc degree with St Mary’s University was an opportunity to use scientific methods to explore what happens when people experience hypnosis and to look at the outcomes.

“By introducing Britain’s first officially recognised scientific qualification in hypnosis, St Mary’s BSc degree in clinical hypnosis will help to build better trust and understanding about the clinical value of hypnosis.”

The Royal Society of Medicine has called for the NHS to use clinical hypnosis to save costs and improve treatment of conditions such as stress and depression.
