They say life’s a beach, and it soon will, at least for a while, when a temporary one is built on the bank of the River Thames.

Champions Wharf, in Twickenham, is set to be transformed into a sandy oasis for two weeks thanks to 20 tonnes of sand, as part of national play day.

The beach will be open daily from Wednesday, July 27, and there will be a full programme of activities for the whole family to take part in.

Councillor Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council’s cabinet member for community, business and culture, said: “Many residents won’t have an opportunity to go on holiday, so this small strip will provide a place to build a sand castle, sit and look at the river or indeed take part in one of the fun activities organised by our play rangers.”

The national play day campaign aims to highlight the importance of play in children’s lives.
