Young innovators experienced the sweet smell of success after winning a prestigious student enterprise competition.

The students from St Paul’s School, Barnes, beat teams from across London to get into the finals at the Savoy Hotel.

They beat tough competition from the very best teams from across the country to be named Britain’s brightest young entrepreneurs.

The challenge to win the HSBC Young Enterprise Company of the Year 2011 award, in association with the Young Enterprise charity, involved planning, realising and running a small business.

The St Paul’s team, who called themselves Summit, produced a sophisticated-looking pen with an in-built portable perfume spray, known as Click, and have been running the business for 10 months.

Team leader Jai Kapoor, 17, said: “We faced the fiercest competition we’ve faced in all the rounds so far.”

The St Paul’s students were congratulated by Prime Minister David Cameron and judges from Coca-Cola Enterprises, HSBC and Cisco.

Mr Cameron said: “Young Enterprise is vital in fostering the culture of enterprise we need right across our country.”

Summit will represent the UK in the European finals of the competition from August 4 to August 7 in Oslo.

The students plan to continue running the business even after the competition is over.

Jai said: “Young Enterprise has given us the means to build the foundation of a business.”

The team are looking to expand the target audience of their product to banks and even hospitals.

The talented teenager added: “Banks could give the pens as corporate gifts, and hospitals could fill the perfume spray with hand sanitiser, so that patients and staff can complete paperwork and still be clean.”
