Cyclists took part a funeral procession to pay tribute to a biking enthusiast, described as the John Peel of cycling, who died while riding through France.

Friends of Twickenham Cycling Club (TCC) chairman Dave Peck cycled with the hearse as it travelled to Mortlake Crematorium, for his funeral service, on Friday, July 8.

Many of those attending donned their TCC kit, while others wore colourful and white clothes following the request to shun the traditional black for the service, which celebrated the life of the cycling fan.

Mr Peck, who was born in 1957, died last month from injuries sustained after falling from his bike while on a cycle with clubmates from London to Paris.

His death shocked the cycling community and saw messages of sympathy flooding in from saddened cycling fans.

One message left on the TCC’s Facebook page by Nick Dodds said: “He was so kind; it was a privilege to know him in any capacity.

“He was like the John Peel of cycling to me – a proper human being, inspiring and inspired in equal measures.

Another message left by Raymond Batsford read: “Dave was one of the best cycling buddies you could ever wish to meet on and off the bike.”

Those unable to attend the funeral paid tribute by wearing their TCC kit on the day of his funeral.

Martin Harris wrote: “So sorry to miss it [the funeral]. I’ll be in TCC kit for the weekend ride through the Dubai desert. I’ll sink a pint in the evening on his behalf as well – it’s only right and proper.”

Mr Peck joined the TCC in the late 1980s and became chairman of the club in 2008.

A tribute on the club’s website said: “He provided encouragement and support for all members, new and old, expert and not so experienced, racing and sporting, and knew everyone in the club by name.

“Dave was always thinking of new ideas for the Club to grow and nurture its members and his leadership will be sorely missed.

The popular cyclist was also an active member of the London Friday Night Skate (LFNS) group, which organises weekly skates around London.

He would often cycle the group’s music bike wearing his trademark bandana.

A special skate was held on Friday, July 1, in memory to Mr Peck, which saw members donning bandanas to pay tribute to their active member.

A message on the LFNS website said: “He was a very valuable team member and is already greatly missed."
