Better accustomed to battling it out in the Commons, Richmond's MP is taking to the water in her latest challenge as she masters the art of skiffing.

On September 16, Susan Kramer will be the novice member of a crew rowing a skiff from Richmond to Greenwich as part of the Great River Race.

Preparing for the race has been a challenge for the MP, who has had to find time in her busy schedule to train.

But driven by a desire to get fit, she has grabbed the oars with both hands.

She said: "I found every excuse in the world not to go to the gym until I decided to do this race.

"I don't think I had done any significant exercise in a decade."

Ms Kramer has teamed up with John White, Richard Rowland and Liz James of Teddington Skiff Club - where she is now a member - to take on the daunting 22-mile course.

She has chosen to support the Emily's Board Campaign to raise awareness of the organisation, established in memory of Kew resident Emily Jenkins.

The campaign works to improve systems for relatives and friends trying to find out where people are in a crisis.

They have also chosen Integrated Neurological Services in Kew as their charity, should they win any prize money.

Ms Kramer said: "I had no natural talent for the skiff and found it incredibly difficult to get the technique."

Another well known Richmond face taking to the water is former University Challenge presenter Bamber Gascoigne.
