Thames Water received nearly 800 comments and a 5,000 signature petition against a super sewer entrance being constructed at Barn Elms, it has been revealed.

The company received more responses about the Barnes playing fields site than any other suggested site in a London-wide consultation into the 20-mile Thames Tunnel.

The results of the consultation were released last night.

Thames Water said in total it had received feedback from 2,869 people.

Of those who gave an opinion, 922 people supported a tunnel and 248 were against the idea, it said.

Of the responses on potential construction sites, Barn Elms attracted the most with 798 comments, plus one petition of 5,013 signatures.

If selected by Thames Water, residents close to the site could face construction work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for more than three years.

However, since the consultation, Thames Water has announced a site south of Carnwath Road in Fulham as a potential alternative.

Phil Stride, head of London Tideway Tunnels at Thames Water, said no final decision had been made and there would be a further consultation later this year.

He said: “Since the consultation closed we have been refining options for the tunnel, including reducing the number of sites required, and identifying alternative sites which are now under consideration.

“As a result of feedback received and further work to develop the project, we have highlighted possible changes at 13 of our preferred construction sites and no changes at 10.

“Before we make any final decisions we want to receive feedback on our amended proposals through our phase two consultation, due to start this autumn.

“We remain committed to ensuring everyone’s views are heard, and will give everyone an equal opportunity to comment on our revised proposals. If anyone has comments or questions prior to the second consultation, we encourage them to get in touch.”

Pressure group Stop the Shaft (StS) later released a statement, which said: "STS is also very concerned about the lack of consultation by Thames Water.

"Many local residents were not aware of the proposed works, and were only alerted as a result of canvassing by STS."

The organisation told BBC London the questionnaire was only delivered eight business days before the end of the consultation period.
