Plans to build a playground close to a Grade II listed tower have been axed after strong protests from park users.
An emergency meeting was called by the leader of Richmond Council last week after park users claimed the planned playground, in Twickenham’s Crane Park, was too isolated and could lead to a rise in antisocial behaviour.
Work was suspended on the site, close to the historic Shot Tower, after an archaeological dig found artefacts.
After the meeting Councillor Christine Percival, Richmond Council’s cabinet member for youth, culture and children’s services, this week, said: “It has been decided the play space will not continue in the current location.”
Heathfield ward member, Councillor Alan Butler, said the decision was “fabulous news”.
He said they were looking at sites away from the tower.
Protestors have argued a playground in the park would fuel a rise in antisocial behaviour and urged the council to find an alternative location.
