Campaigners are making a last ditch attempt to save Heathfield library before it shuts its doors for good next month.
Leaflets will be delivered to households in the Heathfield ward today and tomorrow to highlight the fight against the closure of the 50-year-old library, which is set to shut on March 17.
The leaflet drop has been organised by the Twickenham Labour group, which is also urging people to sign a petition, which calls on councillors to “retain this important service” in the area.
The library in Percy Road and surrounding land was sold by the former Liberal Democrat administration to make way for a new healthcare centre.
A replacement library was to be set up in Heathfield Junior School with the money from the sale.
However, Richmond Council announced the £400,000 move was “unaffordable” last month and has instead proposed finding another community venue where a limited library service could be made available to the people of Heathfield.
People who would like to help out with the leaflet drop should meet at 10am at 52 Warburton Road, Twickenham, today. To sign the petition visit twickerati.wordpress.com/2011/02/07/heathfield-library-twickenham/#comments.
