Tube services were thrown into chaos today as London Underground (LU) workers staged a 24-hour strike.

Parts of the District line were suspended, including the line between Turnham Green and Richmond.

Commuters at Richmond station today were not impressed by the latest strike.

Purvin Shah, 25, travels from his home in Stratford to Richmond every day but had to pay extra money for an overground ticket on Monday because the District line was closed.

He said: “I think I waited nearly 20 minutes for the train.

“It’s a really frustrating and disappointing way to start your Monday. During the cold weather you can also get sick if you have to wait 30 or 40 minutes for a bus or train.”

Steven Goodrick, project manager for medical company Synergy, in Petersham Road, Richmond, said he was late for work because his nearest station in Walthamstow was closed.

He said: “I normally get the overground but I had to get a bus to a different station and then get another one down and get a South West train out from Waterloo.

“It was very crowded.”

Transport for London (TfL) said a special service was in operation between Wimbledon and Ealing Broadway and Upminster.

The District line was also suspended between Earls Court and Kensington Olympia/Edgware Road.

The strike is the fourth for LU workers since August in a row over plans to cut ticket office jobs.

Members of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) and the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) stopped work at 6.30pm last night.

About 80 stations were closed today and all lines were at least partly suspended.

There were also problems reported on the London Overground, with severe delays on the Stratford to Richmond line because of signalling problems.

At Clapham Junction station large queues formed to get down on to the Overground platform.

Latest closures/suspensions:

Bakerloo - suspended between Queens Park and Harrow and Wealdstone.

Central - suspended between White City and Liverpool Street and between Hainault and Woodford via Chigwell.

District - suspended between Earls Court and Kensington Olympia/Edgware Road, and between Turnham Green and Richmond.

Hammersmith & City - suspended between Moorgate and Barking.

Jubilee - suspended between Wembley Park and Stanmore Metropolitan - a special service is in operation but some stations closed.

Northern - special service operating but some stations closed.

Piccadilly - suspended between King's Cross St Pancras and Acton Town/Uxbridge.

Victoria - suspended between Victoria and Brixton Waterloo and City.

TfL said an extra 100 buses and boat services would be available and warned of high demand on its cycle hire scheme during the strike.
