A cricket clubhouse has been destroyed after a fire ripped through the building in the early hours of Saturday.

About 20 firefighters battled for more than two hours to control the blaze, which broke out just before 3.13am in the pavilion used by the Hampton Hill Cricket Club (HHCC), in Bushy Park.

Most of the pavilion was destroyed in the fire and the remainder was demolished on Saturday afternoon for safety reasons, a Royal Parks spokeswoman revealed.

No one was hurt in the fire but irreplaceable photos, scorebooks and trophies housed in the pavilion were destroyed.

A message on the HHCC website said: “It is with great sadness that we have to report that there has been a major fire at the Hampton Hill CC clubhouse.

“Nobody was hurt, but the building has been totally destroyed.

“There are many priceless things which have been lost as a result of this incident, including photos, scorebooks and trophies.

“However, we will of course endeavour to rebuild the clubhouse in a manner which preserves as much of the tradition and heritage of our 155-year-old club.”

A number of gas cylinders were also found in the building and were made safe by firefighters.

London Fire Brigade is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
