Plans to build Europe’s largest hydropower scheme in Teddington look set to move a step closer next week.
Community group Ham Hydro - working closely with Ham United Group - have until next Friday to reach an agreement with private construction company Morrison over the building of the project at Teddington Weir.
Twickenham MP Vince Cable has also met with senior staff at the Environment Agency (EA) to discuss the plan, declaring there was “a will” to make it succeed.
He said: “The EA has agreed to get behind the project, as one of several, designed to utilise the Thames for hydropower.
“We are agreed that community-owned energy schemes, where local people benefit from energy produced, are a valuable contribution to the future of energy policy.
“There are a lot of financial details to be decided, but I think there is a serious will to make the project succeed.”
Once complete, the project will be the largest hydropower schemes in Europe and will generate enough power for more than 900 homes, saving about 1,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
