The contrast in the arrivals of Brentford's two latest signings striker Chris Moore and centre-half Adam Griffiths could not have been greater.

Moore, given a second chance by the club who rejected him 10 years ago, had his own press conference because his Roy of the Rovers' move from Dagenham & Redbridge was the result of lifelong Bees fan Steven Hearn winning £50,000 in the Coca-Cola Win a Player promotion.

Former Watford defender Griffiths, second choice after Brentford's failure to sign triallist Chris Hope, signed on a free transfer after a quiet chat with manager Leroy Rosenior.

Yet he was Brentford's most urgent need after selling their two established centre-backs Michael Turner to Hull City for £350,000 and Sam Sodje to Premiership new boys Reading for a similar fee.

Those fees plus the £100,000 the Bees received for Jay Tabb's move to Coventry means transfer fees have helped them avoid a £400,000 deficit this financial year after a loss of £496,000 for the past year.

Sodje's move depends on the Nigerian international passing a medical after undergoing a minor knee operation.

The defender, who joined Brentford on a free from Margate in May 2004, played in 100 matches for the Bees, and his fee could rise to £500,000 depending on appearances for the Royals.

Rosenior turned to 6ft 2in Australian Griffiths, 26, who had a short spell at Watford in late 2005 and Bournemouth earlier this year, after former Gillingham captain Hope preferred to join Rushden & Diamonds.

The Bees boss said: "Adam hasn't played many games in England, but has had plenty of experience in Australia and Belgium.

"Now I need another centre-half and two midfielders."

Rosenior is trialling Michael Standing, the former Aston Villa and Walsall midfielder, left-winger Trevor Robinson from Millwall, one-time Colchester United and Grimsby midfielder Thomas Pinault, who played in France last season, and non-leaguers Dave Lawrence and Danny Kedwell.

Winger Lawrence, who scored 37 goals for Hillingdon Borough last season, is spending a second week in training with the Bees, while Kedwell, a 22-year-old midfielder who scored 22 goals for Welling United last term, has had his trial put on hold as he has a slight injury.

But Rosenior has decided not to offer contracts to midfielder Paul Smith, who was at Brentford before spells with Gillingham, Walsall and Swindon, ex-MK Dons midfielder Serge Mafoko and youth player Ryan Watts. Former Bristol City keeper Nathan Abbey is also training with Brentford and could start the season in the first team as Stuart Nelson is suspended. So far, Rosenior has made three signings in Griffiths, Moore and fellow striker Jo Kuffour. Moore, 26, a former QPR triallist who hit 51 goals in 110 competitive games for Dagenham, told the Times: "This has given me a chance I might not otherwise have had. "I was at Brentford as a trainee for seven weeks in the 1996-97 season, when Dave Webb was manager and Bob Booker was in charge of the youth set-up, but they turned me down. I hope to prove them wrong." Bees forwards Scott Fitzgerald ironically, Moore's strike partner at Northwood and Calum Willock have been made available on free transfers. Brentford lost 3-1 at Staines Town in their first pre-season friendly on Saturday despite taking the lead through Alex Rhodes. Free transfer departures Isaiah Rankin, Marcus Gayle and Eddie Hutchinson have joined Grimsby, Aldershot Town and Oxford United respectively. Jamie Smith, on loan at Brentford last season from Bristol City, has signed for ex-Bees boss Martin Allen at MK Dons. Brentford, who played a friendly at lfracombe Town yesterday (Thursday), visit Bideford Town on Saturday (3pm) and Yeading next Wednesday (7.30pm). The Bees have arranged another friendly at Hampton & Richmond on Saturday, July 22 (3pm), but the friendly at Swindon Town on July 25 has been cancelled.
