With its shallow, curved auditorium, Watermans Arts Centre, Brentford was a fine forum for enjoying graduating students of the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance present their own choreography and it was a joy.

Even my untrained eye could discern how far these distinctive young men and women have travelled in the three short years since they came together in St Margarets. They've lightened up too, growing confidence allowing humour to blossom.

For instance, a witty number inspired by the naughtiness of ancient Greece featured slave labour, grapes, champagne - and deftly flicked towels to cover nubile male modesty. Another composition was performed to a recording of an interview with one of the students.

The second half opened with a female form rising under a shimmering silk shroud. She writhed as a spider ensnared, then strutted like a smug bride trailing a parachute-sized veil.

Finally she swooshed the folds about her to create a voluminous sari effect and an enduring vision.

The current crop have endured the upheaval of moving since Brunel University decamped in favour of housing.

Fortunately, the school has secured wonderful wooded Victorian property nearby, which is being overhauled and supplemented by purpose designed facilities.
