A world-famous jazz club in a Barnes pub that was set to close 18 months ago is re-launching this week, maintaining nearly half a century of tradition.

There has been jazz played at the Bulls Head pub, on Lonsdale Road, for 45 years but that history was in danger at the end of 2004 when it was told by Richmond upon Thames Council to keep the noise down following a complaint from a resident of a new residential block built next door.

But following consultation between the council, Bulls Head licensees Dan and Liz Fleming, Young's, the brewer that own the pub who agreed to pay £64,000 to help keep the noise down, and executives of Laing, developers of the new homes, a solution was agreed and on December 12 2005 the music licence was restored.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the new Yamaha Jazz Room at The Bulls Head will open its doors.

The Japanese music giant has sponsored the jazz club at the Barnes pub, supplying a new sound system, concert grand piano and drum kit. The room has also been sound proofed, air-conditioned and completely refurbished with a new floor.

Mr Fleming described the period at the end of 2004 as a very difficult time and said "it put years on me".

On Saturday the room will launch with five jazz concerts in one day, starting at 1pm Mr Fleming said: "This is our 45th year and we are known all over the world. I hope we can look forward to another 45 years."
