One of Richmond's landmark shopfronts has been listed among the country's most vulnerable architectural treasures.

On Monday, Matthiae's Caf and Bakery in Kew was added to the 10 buildings in the borough already listed by English Heritage in the Greater London Buildings At Risk Register.

Other at risk structures in Richmond upon Thames include the timber-framed Boathouse No.5 on Platts Eyot, Hampton (built 1917 by Augustine Alban Hamilton Scott) and Normansfield Hospital in Kingston Road, Teddington (built in 1866 as a private sanatorium established by Dr Langdon-Down).

The English Heritage register lists the capital's Grade I, II* and II buildings and monuments that are known to be at risk from neglect or decay and encourages property owners to get help from English Heritage to rescue the building.

Just last month Matthiae's Bakery, the Art Deco fronted premises at 76 to 84 Kew Road, was Grade II listed. It has been empty since 2001 and has suffered from a lack of general maintenance.

Paddy Pugh, head of advice and grants for English Heritage in London, said: "The best way to save a building is to find a good new use for it and it is essential that all parties involved in this process show vision and are constructive and inventive."

Reg Matthiae built the bakery in the 1920s and expanded it to include a cafe, restaurant and catering service.

The bustling family-run business with classic blue and silver Art Deco shop fronts and matching interiors served the Richmond community for 80 years before it shut in 2001.

The property, which is now owned by Finehaze Limited, features a glass ceiling, which was a concern for the Matthiae family during the war because any serious vibrations could have brought it crashing down on staff and customers.

Next door to the main bakery a terrazzo staircase in the foyer leads to a first floor banquet room, and an Art Deco ballroom is on the top floor.

In May the property's developers applied to Richmond Council for planning permission to convert the property into flats, but soon after the old bakery was Grade II listed and a new application is now required to account for its status.

There are 11 at risk buildings in the borough. The ones not yet mentioned include Watchman's box and village lock-up in Petersham Road; 8 King Street, Richmond; United Reformed Church, Little Green, Richmond; the Gallery at Doughty House, Richmond Hill; Pope's Grotto in the grounds of St James School in Cross Deep, Twickenham; Strawberry Hill in Waldegrave Road and Old Brew House in Bushy Park, Teddington.
