Eight children and four adults are in hospital after a chemical leak at a school in Twickenham today, police said.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to St Catherine’s School in Cross Deep, Twickenham, at about 10.52am.

Simon Brownings, Kingston station manager said four adults and eight children had been taken to hospital as part of what he described as "precautionary measures".

Children attending the Barracudas Summer Activity Camp held at the school were evacuated and taken to St James' Independent School for Boys opposite for safety. The BBC reported more than 100 were moved to safety.

Pope’s Grove was cordoned off by police while fire crews investigated.

A police spokeswoman said the leaked chemical was chlorine but could not confirm the nature of the leak.

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman confirmed Thames Water was also called.

A total of 14 London Fire Brigade vehicles were sent to the scene, along with nearly 20 vehicles from the London Ambulance Service.
