A much-loved Teddington station worker is to be rewarded with an MBE.

Alan Hopgood, known as Mr Teddington in reference to his in-depth knowledge of the area, has spent 26 years working at the station as a South West Trains (SWT) clerical officer.

Known for his friendly demeanour and passion for helping customers, Mr Hopgood received an “impressive” number of letters of support from passengers backing his nomination for an MBE.

And the 58-year-old train enthusiast, who lives in Teddington, said he was thrilled to be recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Mr Hopgood, whose career on the railways began in 1978 and began at Strawberry Hill station, said: “I enjoy working at Teddington station.

“It is an ideal size station where I can meet with 30 to 40 'friends' every day and work with fantastic colleagues.

“Being honoured with an MBE is a real privilege.

“I am delighted to be given this honour and will continue to try my best to be helpful to our customers.”

His in-depth knowledge of the rail network coupled with his dedication to customer service have won him praise from passengers and led him to win the Outstanding Customer Service Member of the Year Award 2008, which was voted for by commuters. He also received a Railstaff Award in the customer service category in 2009.

Keen to share his knowledge and expertise with others, dedicated Mr Hopgood’s helpful attitude and the fact that nothing to him is ever too much trouble have also brought him respect from colleagues.

Matt Winnie, SWT area manager, said: “We are delighted for Alan.

“His dedication to the railway and its people has been outstanding.

“His work over the last 31 years has earned him great respect and gratitude from fellow colleagues and customers alike. We are truly indebted to him.”
