Brentford and Isleworth’s Labour candidate has dodged calls to face her parliamentary rivals in a public debate before the general election.

Ann Keen’s failure to commit to both a hustings and a debate on policy and principles this month has prompted her political rivals and constituents to question her desire to be re-elected.

So far, Liberal Democrat Andrew Dakers, Green Party representative John Hunt, Independent candidate Teresa Vanneck-Surplice and Conservative candidate for the seat, Mary MacLeod, have all agreed to speak at the only planned election hustings for the constituency.

Despite repeated requests from the Hounslow and Brentford Times asking whether she will attend, Mrs Keen has not responded.

The junior Health Minister’s silence has also left constituents doubting her commitment to a re-election campaign.

Ms MacLeod said: “It’s time for Ann Keen to face residents and explain why she should be re-elected as their MP.

“Many residents have raised concerns about her expenses, which is why I have written to her and challenged her to hold a public debate with me on the policy and principles which matter to people – Heathrow, the economy, crime and how to rebuild politics after the expenses scandal.

“She just needs to name a date, time and place and I will be there.”

Mr Dakers said: “For the past two general elections, numerous debate organisers have invited Ann Keen to discuss issues of the day on hustings platforms. Unfortunately, Mrs Keen has thus far refused to come on the platform.”

Mr Hunt joined the calls for Mrs Keen to answer questions in a public forum.

The general election hustings, organised by BrentfordTW8.com Brentford Chamber of Commerce and Brentford Community Council, takes place on April 22, at 7pm, at St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Road, Brentford.
