A Twickenham secondary school has been named as one of the top five in the country without a sixth form while seven of the borough's primary schools have been listed among the top 400.

Waldegrave School for Girls, on Fifth Cross Road, was named as the fifth best state secondary school in England without a sixth form in a Sunday Times supplement published last weekend.

The same supplement listed The Queen's CE Primary School in Kew, St Elizabeth's Catholic Primary School in Richmond, St James's RC Primary School in Twickenham, Sacred Heart RC Primary School in Teddington, St Mary's and St Peter's CE Primary School in Teddington, St Mary's CE Primary School in Twickenham and St Edmund's Catholic Primary School in Whitton as part of the top 400 state primary schools.

Heather Flint, headteacher of Waldegrave, said: "I am delighted that Waldegrave is fifth in the table of schools nationally without a sixth form. This table is based on the percentage of grades at A or A*, which in our case was 35.6 per cent. We have achieved this percentage of top grades for several years and it clearly shows that able pupils can do extremely well in a state comprehensive school."

The primary school list was based on results at Key Stage Two level between 2002 and 2004 and The Queen's School, on Cumberland Road, was named the 97th best on the list. Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, Richmond upon Thames Council deputy leader and cabinet member for schools, said: "I am delighted with Waldegrave."
