LONDON Welsh collected three points from Saturday's 27-27 draw in National League Division One, but they were grateful that Doncaster missed a last-minute penalty.

Welsh made a flying start with Matt Fitzgerald scoring in the corner after only three minutes and Lee Cholewa adding the conversion.

The sides exchanged penalties before Fitzgerald scored his second try in the 27th minute after ploughing through Doncaster's five defenders.

But a Doncaster penalty was followed by a missed tackle allowing winger Donovan Van Vuuren to score to the left of the posts.

And a disastrous end to the first half saw Van Vuuren add a second unconverted try to give the Yorkshiremen a 16-12 half-time lead.

The lead changed hands again when John Swords' speed allowed full-back Gareth Swales to score in the corner with Cholewa again adding the extras.

A penalty brought Doncaster level and Michael Wood scored their third try to restore their advantage.

Again Welsh provided the perfect response with Tim Holgate securing their bonus point by weaving his way through, but a missed conversion left the scores level.

And the hosts escaped with a draw despite some careless play at the end.

Jon Benson missing the posts with the kick that would have sent bottom-of-the-table Welsh to another defeat.

Rosslyn Park recorded their first away win of the season 19-12 at Westcombe Park on Saturday.

Park battled back from 12-3 down to lead by a point at half-time thanks to tries from Rhys Lapidus and Nick Harlock.

Park brought on giant South African prop Dewald Blom at the interval and he caused the home side all sorts of problems in the scrum.

But despite three Richard McKeown penalties, Park were left holding on at the end.

RICHMOND were given a tought fight by neighbours Staines before emerging 16-3 winners at the Athletic Ground on Saturday.

Full-back Tim Cook marked his league debut for Richmond by kicking a 40-yard penalty and Neil Piggott then outflanked the covering defence for the hosts' first try.

Staines began to dominate in the second half and Huw Collins made it 8-3 with a penalty and Owen Gregory then had to make a great try-saving catch and drive to keep Richmond in front.

Order was restored before the end with Cook kicking another penalty and James Whitfield securing victory for the league leaders with a late try.

Neither side is in action this weekend. Richmond visit Canterbury on November 12 with Staines hosting Barnes.

London Scottish showed a big improvement as they won 32-12 at Bishop's Stortford in the Powergen London League One on Saturday.

Scottish would have won by a larger margin had it not been for missed chances and some harsh rulings by the referee.

It was an encouraging display, given the absences until December of Rory Greenslade-Jones (broken ankle) and Lee Soper (broken rib).

Stortford scored two early penalties, but Max Evans playing at outside centre made a good break that eventually led to a try for Alex Alesbrook.

Tom Williams missed the conversion and a penalty so Scottish remained one behind.

Fine work by Karl Hensley and David Gaule then resulted in a try for Luke Stack, which Williams converted.

Scottish got two further tries through Street and Vines. Williams kicked the conversions and two penalties, while Hughes landed two penalties for Stortford.

Scottish: Vines, Pinder (Smeaton, 70mins), Evans, Heke, Stack, Williams, Gayle, Johnston, Box, MacDonald (Kelly), Eagle (McCarthy, 45), Goodbody, Alesbrook, Street, Hensley.

Mid-table Barnes were pipped 15-14 at Ealing in Saturday's London Division One clash.

Barnes took the lead through prop Timothy McKellar's seventh-minute try, converted by Paul Farmer.

Ealing levelled the scores within 10 minutes and that was how it stayed for a further 49 minutes.

But, following a yellow card for Eugene Grimes, Ealing took advantage with a try and a penalty.

Late on, Barnes scored a deserved try through hooker Travers Bonney, again converted by Farmer, but the visitors ran out of time.

Barnes: Archer, Lindemann, Heather, Farmer, Robinson, Damant, Springhall, Leigh (Cockle), Bonney, McKellar, Grimes (White), Sellers, Bibby, McLaughlin (Givens), Roles.

TWICKENHAM were blown away in the second half of their London Two North match at Chingford on Saturday.

In the first half their forwards put in a massive performance with the wind behind them and they led 15-14 at half-time thanks to tries from Charlie l'anson and Ben Isherwood.

But Chingford used the stiff breeze to good effect in the second half, keeping Twickenham pinned in their half for long periods and the visitors conceded 50 points for the second time this season.

Twickenham have an extra week to recover before their next league game against Thurrock on November 12.

Twickenham: Nicholson, Tytherliegh, Bowler (Thomas), Davies, Goff, Pace, l'Anson (Wakfield), Kirby, Peters, Rogers, Williams, Isherwood, Stone, Wadden, Moses (Bradford).

Old Hamptonians went down 25-19 to London New Zealand in Saturday's top-of-the-table clash.

Makeshift number 10 Duncan Peel found a gap early on which led to winger Alex Ritchie touching down.

London New Zealand stormed back to lead 17-8, but Peel then scored his second penalty and Ritchie his second try. Hampton would have led if Peel had not missed a penalty in front of the posts.

London New Zealand pulled away towards the end, assisted by a harsh yellow card for Hampton full-back James Thompson for handling in the ruck.

Hampton, whose winger Andy Jones had barely stepped off the plane from Sao Paulo before joining his team mates, should be more settled this weekend against Cantabrigians in the National Cup.

GRASSHOPPERS turned around a half-time deficit for the second consecutive week.

They trailed Cheshunt 10-5 at half-time despite a try from centre Donny Lam towards the end of the period.

But Grasshoppers exerted some real pressure during the second half allowing the backs to play some fantastic rugby.

Lam completed a hat-trick of tries and Tom Barber, Jeremy Easton and Stuart Danniels also went over as Grasshoppers ran out 29-12 winners.

Harlequin Amateurs ground out a deserved 12-5 victory over leaders Chiswick in Herts/Middlesex Division 1.

Quins continued the fine form they showed in the previous week's crushing defeat of Old Millhillians and dominated most of the forward play.

James Dewar was sin-binned just before the half-time whistle, but Chiswick were also briefly reduced to 14 men when one of their flankers was shown the yellow card.

With the numerical advantage after the return of Dewar, Quins went ahead with a try by Adam Wallace and Dewar converted.

Chiswick replied with a try, but Quins stormed back and Shaun Terrey rolled off his opponent to touch down in the corner.

Harlequins Amateurs: Lawrence, Glanville, Fairweather, Dewar, Knowles, Thompson, Camacho, Wilcox, Wigginton, Terrey, Birbeck, Hurst, Wallace, Fretwell, Ah-Sun, Baines, Rose, Hugall.
