Richmond's schools are continuing to perform way above national levels according to a Government report.

Under the Performance and Assessment Report (PANDA), 82 per cent of Richmond's primary schools have been judged to be good or very good schools.

In secondary schools 71 per cent of pupils were said to be at or above the average level of attainment.

Chairman of the education committe, Councillor David Cornwell said: "I am delighted the performance of our pupils continues to exceed national levels of attainment. It is a credit to teachers and pupils that Richmond offers such a high standard quality of education."

However the council admitted it was concerned at the lack of Richmond schools included in the very good schools category. It now aims to improve the climate of schools including spiritual and moral education as well as management and efficiency.

Coun Cornwell added: "We are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of our secondary schools and steps have already been taken towards developing a local authority plan."
