Richmond fall back to sixth place

9:49am Friday 24th June 2005

Richmond dropped to sixth place after losing at home to Brondsesbury on Saturday when they sadly missed leading bowler Craig Jones.

Put in to bat, Richmond made 251 off 62 overs, thanks to a fourth-wicket stand of 130 by Nick Compton (91), the grandson of ex-Test star Dennis, and Oli Hutton (50), the grandson of the great Sir Len Hutton.

Other useful contributions came from Ben Griffiths and Nick Armstrong.

Brondesbury lost two early wickets, but 16-year-old prodigy Billy Godleman and Ben Claypole put on 121 for the third wicket.

Nick Jones then guided the visitors to victory with six wickets to spare.

On Sunday Richmond beat Maori Oxshott by 10 wickets in the Evening Standard Trophy, with Simon Snelling taking 5-35.

Oli Hutton (57no) and Stephen Price (66 not out) overhauled the visitors' 126.

This Saturday Richmond are at home to Ealing.

Teddington visited Icken-ham on Saturday determined to stay top of the league.

And that is exactly what they did, losing only five wickets as they reached their target of 253.

Ickenham got off to a good start, losing the first wicket with 56 on the board before climbing to their total.

In contrast Teddington got off to a stuttering start and were 29-2 before a partnership of 130 steadied the ship.

In the end, Teddington skipper Robin Jones guided his side to victory with a quickfire 50.

On Sunday Teddington's Evening Standard Cup run came to an end in the second round as they lost to Esher by 90 runs.

TWICKENHAM returned to winning ways on Saturday with a five-wicket victory at home to new boys Southall.

Bowling first Twickenham's JP Cronje, Mark Barnes and Kirk Edwards slowly began working their way through the Southall order.

Cronje took 3-55 before the Southall innings was rounded off in spectacular fashion for 181, skipper Andrew Barnes running out his counterpart.

In reply Twickenham's openers Mark Hudson (28) and Aly Vokes (16) started off well before Vokes was dismissed.

Kirk Edwards lifted Twickenham's total past the 100-mark but his departure on 44 prompted a middle order wobble until Andrew Barnes steadied the ship.

Justin Scriven's 29 saw Twickenham home with 10 overs to spare.

On Sunday Twickenham were knocked out of the IBEX Cup by Edmonton despite Kirk Edwards' 160. Twickenham scored 286, a total matched by Edmonton, who won because they lost fewer wickets.

This weekend, Twickenham are away to Harrow St Mary's on Saturday and visit Streatham & Marlborough on Sunday.

Barnes missed a chance to reinforce their claim to a swift return to the Middlesex Cricket League top flight as they slipped up at Uxbridge.

The Lonsdale Road club could only pick up one point from a losing draw that sees them fall from second place in Division Two.

Barnes, relegated last year, have struggled with injuries to key players, including skipper Mark Price, recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of last year's campaign.

Uxbridge were put in on a typically flat batting track and a couple of missed catches helped them reach 274-9 from 50 overs.

Price, James Drake-Brockman and left-armer Ollie Ratcliffe each took two wickets.

The Barnes reply was positive, with Barry Wigley (54) and Darren Chaston (46) relishing the challenge even though they had to face three beamers in the second over as Uxbridge's Kiwi bowler struggled to grip the ball after liberally applying sun cream.

Drake Brockman (39) and Geoff Warrington (37) continued the challenge but the pressure of needing 5.5 an over told and the wickets fell in rapid succession.

With just one wicket in hand, Shane Arkinstall and Ratcliffe hung on for four tricky overs to secure a point from a losing draw.

Barnes host Hornsey at Lonsdale Road on Saturday.

KEW regained top spot in Division 2A with a five-wicket win at Bagshot on Saturday.

The home side were all out for 176, Kew's Peter Wellings doing the majority of the damage with 7-66.

In reply opener Paul Abbott (55) scored his second straight half-century before Matt Dowling's unbeaten 57 ensured victory with 14 overs to spare.

Kew's second XI are still searching for their first win of the season following a heavy loss at home to Royal Ascot.

The visitors racked up 5-262, a total that proved too much for the hosts, who collapsed on 85.

The third XI got back to winning ways, beating Stoke Green with 14 overs to spare.

NPL Teddington's troubles continued in the Home Counties West league with a seven-wicket defeat to high-flying Tring Park.

Again an insufficient total of 167-6 was posted, with the major contributions coming from Neil Barnett, Jason de la Pena and Ian Broady, but Tring reached their target comfortably.

Rob Snow took 5-26 as the second XI defeated Amersham by 40 runs, while the tird XI had a close-fought draw against Eversley.

The 4ths went down by five wickets to local rivals Richmond Nomads, while on Sunday the club beat Deansbrook by four wickets.

WORCESTER PARK beat Addiscombe by six wickets thanks to a five-wicket haul from on-song spinner Ed Southey.

The South African took 5-25 as Park dismissed Addiscombe for 156.

Despite their lowly position, Addiscombe showed plenty of fight, and teenager Dean Hewitt (3-25) impressed as he helped reduce Park to 35-3.

But Rob Waite (47) and Gary Marshall (51 not out) got things back on track before Matt Newell finished the job with a crisp 21 off 18 balls.

HAMPTON Hill were sizzling in the heat on Saturday as they produced four unbeaten performances.

The first XI secured an important home victory over Chesham, lifting them up the league.

Bowling first Aussie Myles Harry claimed six wickets and Tony Parker two as Hill bundled out the visitors for 155.

In reply Hill reacheded their target with time and wickets in hand, Jamie Sherry leading the way with an unbeaten 67. Meanwhile in Oxfordshire the second XI drew with league leaders Kidmore End.

Hill saw their hosts post 270-8 and, in reply, Nigel Coates struck a half-century before running out of steam.

With 11 overs remaining, Hill stretched their lead to 201, but they ended the innings batting for a draw on 230-7.

The third XI secured a nine- wicket victory at home to Chesham, while the fourths won by 31 runs at Chertsey.

On Sunday, Hill lost to Ottershaw.

KINGSTONIAN player Maz Hassan ignored injury to keep his team on course for promotion with a victory at Carshalton over Croygas.

A shoulder strain prevented him from bowling and restricted his fielding, leaving him to concentrate on his batting.

It paid dividends, and he backed up the previous week's 128 with 80 as Ks scored 237-7 to successfully chase the home team's 236-6 dec.

Twickenham Ladies knew their match against Brighton and Hove second XI at The Green in Twickenham was always going to be a tough challenge, with Brighton & Hove undefeated in the Division Two.

Brighton & Hove won the toss and asked Twickenham to bat.

Opener Naomi Poletyllo took command and recovered from the loss of three quick wickets to steady the innings.

With the help of Janet Greenhead and Val Castle who both scored 19 she saw the score to 124-6 before being bowled by Nicki Pym for 59.

Despite 12 overs remaining at this stage, the tail-enders were unable to add significantly to the total and Twickenham were all out for 135 in the 36th over.

Pym finished with 4-40, with Elizabeth Hopkins, Francis Block and Georgina Paull, the other Brighton & Hove bowlers sharing the spoils with two each.

In reply Brighton & Hove made it look easy, thanks to an opening partnership of 83 between Alison Bruce and Sian Price of 83.

Price was finally out for 35 in the 17th over.

Another quick wicket at 97, when Alys Donnelly dismissed Fiona Hopkins, gave Twickenham some hope but the visitors' captain Claire Parker joined Bruce at the crease and secured an eight-wicket win in the 30th over. Bruce finished with 68 not out.

For Twickenham, Ann Baker took 1-18 and Donnelly 1-14.

This weekend Twickenham are again at home at their Broom Road ground in a non-league match against Blackheath from Kent.
