Firm fined £4,000 after building site accident

A MAN suffered serious injuries following a fall at a building site at Kew Riverside resulting in a prosecution against the construction company.

Savill Fabrications Limited was fined £4,000 at City of London Magistrates on December 2 after the health and safety prosecution.

The Health and Safety Executive investigated the incident where the Savill's employee, Mr Robert Totham, fell from height on May 25.

The company, of Milton Avenue, Croydon, Surrey, pleaded guilty to a single charge of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and on top of the fine was ordered to pay costs of £10,000.

HSE Inspector Alec Ferguson, said: "The investigation of this incident revealed that a fairly routine construction activity - the placing of steel beams for the support of concrete floors - was being undertaken without either suitable supervision, or the workers being made aware of how to carry out such work safely.

"Falls from height are the biggest cause of death and injury in the construction industry.

"The risks are obvious and well known inspectors from HSE's construction division expect companies to take adequate measures to either eliminate or control these risks."
