Website in line for award

AN educational website run by a Twickenham teacher is in the final for an international award.

World InfoZone has been shortlisted for the Rome Global Junior Challenge for its feature 'Shalom from Israel'.

The site, founded by Twickenham teacher Teresa Read, has already earned runner-up prize in another international competition, the Stockholm Challenge.

World InfoZone carries information and news from around the world and encourages children to communicate with peers in other countries.

The Shalom from Israel project started off as a partnership between Teresa and Marsha Goren, a teacher in Petach Tikva. The project now involves partners in 30 countries.

Teresa explained: "I started WIZ in 1996 whilst working as a secondary school teacher in Twickenham. World InfoZone has no funding and all the work is undertaken by myself with advice on some technical matters from a former student."

The site was shortlisted for the Stockholm award for its "contribution in the global movement of building a better information society for all".

Now 'Shalom from Israel' is one of three UK projects to make the Global Junior Challenge finals.

The challenge rewards innovative projects which use the latest computer technologies in the fields of education and training.

The competition is supported by the city of Rome and has an international jury.
