OPPOSITION continues to mount against a proposed development for the old Jewson site in Sandy Lane, Teddington.
Hampton Wick's three councillors recently voiced strong objection to proposals by Linden Homes and residents have now formed an action group to fight the development.
The plans submitted to Richmond upon Thames Council include 137 apartments, a further 92 units described as 'affordable housing', a care home, crche and a number of small office units.
Resident Ian Jones-Healey said: "Since the plans have been drawn up we have all been increasingly worried. People are far from happy about it.
"It is a huge development that will have a massive impact and be very intrusive."
The Sandy Lane Site Action Group believe the development is excessive and would put "even more pressure on our schools, roads, health services." They are concerned by the hundreds of cars that could come from two new exits onto Sandy Lane and an insufficient number of car parking spaces.
The 16 buildings, up to five storeys high, would be visible from inside Bushy Park and are described as "an eyesore for surrounding streets."
Commenting on behalf of Linden Homes, Gareth Epps said the company were disappointed with the objections, particularly following "intense and prolonged negotiations and consultations with all interested groups."
He added: "Linden are keen to gain the support of local residents and members alike and would welcome the opportunity to meet ward councillors to try and agree a mutually acceptable situation."
The deadline for objections to be registered was yesterday, but they will still accept any letters up to the date of the decision.
The application will go before the planning committee but not for another two or three months while investigation continues. The application can be viewed at Hampton Wick and Teddington libraries and on the council website.
