Ham and Petersham will be going green as residents compete to be crowned Britain's most innovative community.
The area has been chosen to take part in British Gas’ Green Streets community energy challenge, which launches today.
Residents will go head-to-head against 13 other streets to see who can do the most to cut energy use, lower carbon emissions and generate their own energy over the year.
The community which best achieves these objectives will receive £100,000 to spend on an environmental project of their choice.
Richmond Council will be working in partnership with Richmond Environment Network and Ham United Group plan to transform the area into a model village showcasing new green technologies.
The project seeks to bring together schools, the library, and community buildings, to show renewable technologies in action and to educate the wider community.
Richmond Park MP Susan Kramer said: “The funding Richmond Environment Network will receive from British Gas will create a low carbon zone and energy saving projects in schools, churches and community halls in Ham and Petersham, and this must be supported.
“Anything that goes towards cutting harmful greenhouse gases is to be applauded - and it is great to see both British Gas and our area leading the way.”
British Gas will be working in partnership with the 14 Green Streets communities to deliver the projects.
