Finding your way between Richmond and Twickenham will be made a lot easier thanks to a new pedestrian information system intended to help people navigate their way around the towns.
It is also hoped the Legible London system of street signs, maps and 3D images will encourage people to explore the area’s “world-famous landmarks” by foot and remove street clutter.
The Mayor of London’s transport adviser, Kulveer Ranger, joined Richmond Council’s cabinet member for traffic, transport and parking, Councillor David Trigg, on Twickenham riverside to show off the first sign on Monday.
Mr Ranger said: “Richmond’s leafy image, historic landmarks and riverside location, make it a fascinating area to discover on foot.
“The Legible London scheme aims to equip pedestrians with all the information they need to get from A to B quickly and easily.
“I am confident that Legible London will help encourage thousands more to stride out on foot, helping to boost health and cut congestion and pollution.”
A total of 48 signs will be installed in the first scheme in the outer London boroughs.
They will help people quickly get their bearings and to help them to locate shops, parks, hotels, landmarks, toilets and stations.
The scheme has been used to guide pedestrians around the Bond Street station area in central London for two years.
Coun Trigg said: “Once the Legible London maps are in place we will be removing a large number of signs and other street clutter to make the borough more inviting and easier to navigate.
“I’m sure our residents, and the millions of visitors who come to see our world class landmarks, like Richmond Park and Kew Gardens, will appreciate being able to find them more easily.”
Signs will go up over the next month and the scheme is designed to complement the three-year, £4.2m smarter travel programme, which aims to cut the number of car journeys in the borough by 5 per cent.
