Doris Stone has volunteered in her community for more than three decades, organising everything from lunch clubs to bingo sessions.

But the community-minded 87-year-old said she couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about when she was honoured with an Outstanding Achiever of the Year award, at Hounslow’s inaugural Housing Heroes awards.

The pensioner was among those recognised for their contribution to their communities with a three-course dinner at a glitzy awards ceremony on September 24.

Mrs Stone has been volunteering for 30 years and runs activities at the Bedfont Lane Community Association, including OAP lunch clubs, bingo and fundraising events to support charities.

She said: “I feel really proud but I don’t know what all the fuss is about.

“I love doing what I do and that is good enough for me.

“We are a total community association, involving everyone from all walks of life.”

A spokesman for Hounslow Homes, which ran the awards, said: “She is a credit to the many that know her and she works with astonishing commitment and passion. Without her, many of the activities such as the art, kick-boxing and dance clubs for young residents, simply wouldn’t happen.”

Meadowcroft warden Roger Cannakamma’s residents said they would be lost without him. He won the Best Scheme of the Year for acting as a lifeline to his neighbours by keeping them in touch with family abroad via email.

He said: “Recently one of our tenants went in for an operation and I emailed her daughter.

“It is something the tenant would not be able to do.”

A Hounslow Homes spokesman said: “As a warden at Meadowcroft, Roger Cannakamma is considerate, knowledgeable, approachable and best of all, caring towards the people who live in Meadowcroft. Nothing is too much bother.”

Bernadette O’Shea, Hounslow Homes chief executive, said: “It was a fantastic event, which the tenants really enjoyed.

“Hounslow Homes is proud to recognise the good work tenants and leaseholders do in their community and we hope they now know how special they are.”

More than 180 tenants and guests from across the borough attended the event, which also incorporated the annual Hounslow Homes 2009 Gardening Awards.
