His day job may involve inflicting pain on patients in his dentist’s chair, but his other occupation is clearly music to the ears of many.

Andrew Bain is East Sheen’s very own singing dentist, and as well as producing beautiful smiles across Richmond, he also has a £1m record deal with SonyBMG.

But clients expecting to be serenaded into a state of calm by Mr Bain’s operatic voice, before he pulls out his drill, should think again, because the 35-year-old keeps his two passions separate.

He said: “I am leading a double life, but it is quite an exciting double life.

“I pick and choose who I tell a little bit because some people are a bit nervous at the dentist.

“Some might think if he’s also singing he’s not committed to being a dentist – which is not true.”

Mr Bain became qualified in dentistry in 1997, but has always loved music.

He began singing in choirs at a young age, went on tour with Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Les Misérables in 1999 and Bill Kenwright’s Whistle Down the Wind in 2002 and signed his million pound contract last July.

While he waits for SonyBMG to release his recently completed album, Mr Bain, who has appeared on GMTV, London Tonight and in videos online, works two days a week – soon to be three – at the Park Dental Clinic in Upper Richmond Road West.

Mr Bain said: “I quite like a bit of variety in life – singing and dentistry work quite well together.

“It is hard to make a full time living from singing at times, whereas dentistry is a little bit more predictable.

“Dentistry keeps you down to earth and keeps things going.

“At the moment I cannot see either disappearing from my life.”

Colleague Anuja Wagner said: “Staff are quite tickled with the singing and it certainly makes the practice more interesting if our dentists and staff have other interests.

“When Andrew joined the girls did take sneak looks on YouTube and had a good giggle.”
