FORGET Wimbledon - the real event of this weekend is Twickeree, a triennial camp for all the beavers, cubs, scouts, explorers and adults in the borough.

The weekend will see Marble Hill Park in Twickenham transformed into a huge tented village as the scouts descend for a weekend of scouting at its best. Everyone is welcome to visit this great camp - the largest of its kind in the UK - to see the fun and find out more about scouting.

Spokesman for the local scouts Richard Holmes said: "With over 1,000 people camping, Twickeree is a great event - and quite a sight to behold. We are crossing our fingers that the weather will stay good, although it has only rained at Twickeree once since the 1930s! Twickeree is our showcase of scouting, and we would like to invite everyone in the borough to come and visit us, and see scouting first hand."

Twickeree helps to promote Scouting in the borough and provides an excellent opportunity to recruit young people and new leaders to one of the world’s largest youth organisations.

This year Twickeree anticipates that over 2,500 parents, friends and members of the public will visit the event each day.

English Heritage has allowed the Scouts to transform half of one of the borough’s most prestigious parks into a scout camp, while the Rugby Football Union is supporting the event with sponsorship.

RFU Community Relations Officer Fraser Cullen says: "As a sports governing body, sport and leisure activities for young people are dear to our heart. This excellent weekend of activities will help develop awareness, skills and friendships, as well as promote Scouting, and we are glad to provide funding to ensure its success."
