POLICE are warning elderly people in the borough to be on their guard after a bogus caller claiming to be a council worker robbed a 92-year-old Mortlake man of £800, leaving him very shaken.

The conman called at the pensioner’s home in Watney Road on Wednesday June 18th at 10.20am stating that the road outside his house was being dug up and as a result he had come to look at the water supply.

The victim went with the man to look at the water under the sink and he believes it was at this point a second suspect entered the open front door and searched the upstairs of the house, finding the money in a spare bedroom.

Police urge residents not to let anyone into their homes without checking their identity, something any genuine caller will be happy to assist with.

The suspect is described as being a white male, 5ft 11ins tall with short fair hair and a dark sports jacket, white trousers and black shoes.
